The Yankee Whipper

Now this bird feeder sounds a lot like the Yankee Flipper Bird Feeder. The difference with this feeder is that it doesn't actually "toss the squirrels off of the feeder. I know, I know. Where is the fun and entertainment in that? It is another squirrel-proof feeder made by Droll, but the Yankee Whipper works a bit differently.

This feeder has collapsible mechanical perch rods that are weight-activated. When the squirrels get on them the weight of the squirrel causes the squirrel to fall off.  The perch then re-sets itself automatically. About the largest size bird that is going to be able to perch on this feeder without activating it is a cardinal.

This is another well-built sturdy feeder from Droll that hangs from a stainless steel wire hanger, is a tubular style with 4 feed ports, and holds 5 pounds of seed. It is a lovely blue color and looks great in your garden.

Users did have some interesting things to say about the functionality of this feeder and it makes me wonder just what the brain capacity of a squirrel is... There heads are quite tiny after-all.

Here is the good and bad from some users:

- smarter squirrels can and do hang from the bottom of the feeder and still use it, although this can be prevented with a little ingenuity.

- Grackles can be a problem, they can still hang onto the curved perches and feed even when the perches drop down.

- individual perches allow several birds to feed at one time.

- save lots of bird seed and the smaller birds love it.
